India’s Tata Motors on Wednesday launched an electric model of its popular Tiago hatchback with a sticker price starting from 849,000 rupees ($10,370), making it the most affordable electric vehicle in the country.

Tata is anticipated to gain market share in India with the Tiago EV, even though a large portion of the car’s success is likely attributable to government subsidies and high tariffs that have hampered imports. Tata is presently the only manufacturer producing EVs in that country.
The electric Tiago EV is far less expensive than the next most cheap EV in India, the electric Tigor compact sedan from Tata, with a starting price of about $14,940. However, certain EV models are available in China for as little as 32,800 yuan ($4,525).
It is anticipated that the Tiago EV will cost about a tenth of what its gasoline-powered equivalent does.
