BRUSSELS: The European Union will impose new sanctions on Russia targeting industry, financial sectors and export controls over Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, an EU diplomat said on Thursday.
Russia has been subject to severe and unprecedented sanctions by the European Union (EU) since it started its full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
Along with the sanctions already in place since 2014 in reaction to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and noncompliance with the provisions of the Minsk agreements, these new sanctions are being applied to the country.
Sanctions include targeted restrictive measures (individual sanctions), economic, diplomatic, and visa restrictions.
The goal of the economic sanctions is to make Russia answerable for its actions and severely hinder its ability to launch additional aggressive actions.
The targeted sanctions are intended to hit both the people who profit from and those who are responsible for supporting, sponsoring, or carrying out actions that jeopardize Ukraine’s independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Iran, Belarus, and North Korea have also been subject to sanctions by the EU as payback for their military support of Russia.
Furthermore, in light of Alexei Navalny’s passing and the continuous deterioration of Russia’s human rights situation, the EU has imposed sanctions on individuals and organizations.
