Talia Ellis and her family live on a farm in New South Wales, Australia. So they are perhaps not the most likely owners of a pub 1,800km (1,200 miles) away in outback Queensland.

An Australian family has made news for their incredible story of perseverance and adventure when they traveled 1,800 kilometers to take over the management of a rural pub in the middle of the Outback. Their quest, which takes them from the bustling city of Sydney to the harsh seclusion of Birdsville, embodies their spirit of camaraderie and desire for novel experiences.

The Johnson family, which consists of Jack and Emily, two adolescent children, and parents Mark and Sarah, made this bold decision in an effort to live a life that is less typical. They left the bustle of the city behind, trading in their contemporary conveniences for the rustic appeal and special challenges of running the venerable Birdsville Hotel, a historic tavern renowned for its lively atmosphere and close ties to the community.

that “we were searching to do something various, anything that would connect us nearer as individuals and enable us to be an integral component of a tightly connected community,” Mark Johnson explained. “The chance to run the Birdsville House came up, and we felt it was precisely what we needed.”

A key component of Queensland’s little community of Birdsville is the 1884-founded Birdsville Hotel. Situated on the periphery of the Simpson Desert, the town boasts a population of just over 100, rendering it one of the most remote locations in Australia. The hotel welcomes thousands of tourists annually despite its rural location, especially during the nationally recognized Birdsville Races, an annual horse racing event that draws spectators from all over the nation.
