Sacked police officer Derek Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter Tuesday in the death of African-American George Floyd in a case that roiled the United States for almost a year, laying bare deep racial divisions.
Derek Chauvin, a former Minneapolis police officer, was found guilty on all charges related to George Floyd’s death by the jury. Even before the trial started, it was one of the most widely followed cases in recent memory and sparked a national conversation about racism in the system and police violence.
Chauvin, 45, was convicted of third-degree murder, second-degree manslaughter, and inadvertent second-degree murder.
Chauvin watched the verdict come back, only his eyes showing through a surgical mask covering the rest of his face. The jury was commended by Judge Peter Cahill for their “heavy-duty jury service.” The jury was dismissed, Chauvin was placed under arrest again, and Cahill stated that Chauvin’s sentencing will take place in eight weeks.
If someone with no criminal history is found guilty of unintended second-degree murder, state sentencing guidelines indicate 12.5 years in jail. On one count, however, prosecutors might ask for a sentence as much as 40 years if Cahill finds aggravating circumstances.
After placing Chauvin in handcuffs, a deputy led him to a separate room.
According to journalist pool reports from inside the courtroom, Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd, hugged prosecutor Jerry Blackwell, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, and other people. Blackwell shook hands with Ellison.
