1.Father Xu Wei
A loving father from Kunming, China named Xu Wei has set out on a valiant quest to preserve his two-year-old son Haoyang, who has Menkes Syndrome, a rare genetic illness. Because China’s borders were closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic and he was unable to obtain the required medicines, Xu took matters into his own hands and produced life-saving medication in a makeshift lab. His narrative is an incredible example of the extent a father will go to in order to keep their child safe.
Xu Wei did not accept that his son’s need for a life-saving drug was over when he discovered that it was unavailable in China. Even though Xu didn’t have any medical training beyond high school, he made the decision to make the drug himself
Xu set up a makeshift lab in his father’s gym, where he started teaching himself the fundamentals of medicinal chemistry. Xu diligently researched the production of copper histidine using internet databases and translation programs. He was able to successfully generate the first vial of the drug after six weeks of trial and error.
Friends and family expressed doubt and worry about u Wei’s plan to make medicine for his kid. Many thought that his efforts were in futile and that it was impossible for someone without any medical training to be successful. Motivated by his love for Haoyang and his wish to provide his son with the finest life could provide, Xu did not back down.
Eventually, the world community took notice of Xu’s efforts, including a Chinese organization called Lantu and an American biotech company called VectorBuilder. Motivated by Xu’s commitment, several organizations have started studying Menkes Syndrome through gene therapy in the hopes of developing a better cure.
