T20 World Cup: West Indies’ 104-Run Win over Afghanistan

Cricket Sports

The West Indies showed their prospects of winning the World Cup by humiliating Afghanistan by 104 runs in St. Lucia.

Nicholas Pooran was the most outstanding batsman for the West Indies, scoring 98 runs in 53 balls and leading his team to 218 for 5 before Afghanistan could only muster 114 runs in response.

Both teams had already qualified for the Super 8s going into tonight’s game, but the result ensures that the hosts will win the group and go undefeated.

Their team scored 102 at the end of the eighth over, having lost to Pooran (38 balls) and Johnson Charles (43), on his home ground.

Naveen-ul-Haq (1 for 41) removed Charles, although Shai Hope (25 off 17) had a brief appearance.

Captain Rovman Powell (26 off 15) contributed to the West Indies’ triumph of over 200 runs before Pooran was out in the last over.

Afghanistan was never able to match the total.

Despite having three wickets from Obed McCoy and two each from Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hoisen, Afghanistan was losing wickets steadily.

They ultimately fell more than 100 rejections shy of their target.

Significantly, the West Indies’ three overs of wicketlessness at a cost of 38 runs silenced the tournament’s top wicket-taker, Fazalhaq Farooqi.

The West Indies have experienced their biggest victory streak in the men’s T20 World Cup.

West Indies captain Rovman Powell noted that his team’s string of four straight victories in the group.
