KARACHI: The Sindh cabinet on Thursday decided to lower the passing percentage in MDCAT-2021 from 65 percent to 50 percent so that the candidates with less than 50 percent score may be considered as eligible for admission in Session 2021-2022.
The decision was taken in a Sindh cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah here in Karachi. This decision would not only provide an opportunity to the provincial candidates to seek admission in medical and dental colleges/universities of Sindh but the seats which were going to be unfulfilled/vacant would be utilised,” CM Murad stated.
Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, made this statement while presiding over the cabinet meeting at CM House.
Mumtaz Shah, the chief secretary, Sajid Jamal Abro, the PSCM, Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of P&D, advisers, special assistants, and provincial ministers were present at the meeting.
The Pakistan Medical Commission (PMC) Act was adopted by the National Assembly to replace the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) and to regulate the medical profession, medical education, and the recognition of medical and dental qualifications throughout Pakistan.
While PMC 2020’s Section 16(f) grants PMC the right to conduct tests, Section 18(3) stipulates that admissions to medical and dentistry programs offered by public colleges must adhere to provincial government policy.
Sindh Health Minister Azra Pechuho declared during the meeting that “marks obtained by a student in MDCAT conducted by the Authority shall constitute a minimum of 50% of the weightage for the purposes of admission in the public colleges.”
“In addition, the current mandatory passing score of 65 percent is not mentioned.”
Consequently, 492 of the roughly 1800 seats that were left empty stayed unoccupied. Thirteen hundred candidates from nearby provinces applied to the private sector.
