Serious accusations of assault and sexual harassment have been made against the Punjab police, whose territory they crossed on January 25, by three foreign tourists who were cycling through the Sadiqabad region on their route to Lahore.

The bicycle tourists, Alex Sidney of Italy, Charlie West of the UK, and Motahhareh Abbasi of Iran, were the subject of numerous alleged assaults since they entered Punjab, according to information that surfaced on Sunday. On Saturday, a video of a policeman attacking them went viral. They have always been escorted by Punjab police, who are meant to protect them, but it is the police that are supposedly the attackers.

Charlie West, their third companion, planned to cycle alone to Lahore because he rides quickly, but things are unclear right now.

Dawn made numerous calls to the police in Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad to get their story, but their spokespeople declined to answer.

The tourists, according to sources in the Rahim Yar Khan police, had checked out of the hotel in Sadiqabad on Saturday and were now lodging at a restaurant near a gas station in the center of Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad. The sources maintained that the police escort was present for the security of the tourists, but they refuted the claims of attack.
