Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy urged the European Union on Tuesday to prove that it sided with Ukraine in its war with Russia and a day after signing an official request to join the bloc. The European Union is going to be much stronger with us, that’s for sure. Without you, Ukraine is going to be lonesome,” Zelenskiy told the European Parliament by video link.
“Do prove that you are with us. Do prove that you will not let us go. Do prove that you are indeed Europeans and then life will win over death and light will win over darkness. Glory be to Ukraine,” he continued.
Zelensky’s appeal coincides with the Russian military’s imminent attack on Ukrainian cities, which includes a devastating missile hit on the government building in Kharkiv. He underlined that the conflict extends beyond Ukraine and involves the defense of democratic and human rights ideals across all of Europe. Zelensky pleaded for EU nations to demonstrate their solidarity with Ukraine by expediting the country’s EU membership process and offering more significant military and financial help.
He appealed to Europe to band together against Russian oppression, framing the struggle as one between good and evil, life and death. The speech sparked passionate reactions and standing ovations from several EU parliamentarians, as it struck a deep chord throughout the continent. This appeal highlights the seriousness and urgency of the Ukrainian situation, as well as its wider consequences for the security and stability of Europe.
