Pakistanis Abroad Set New Remittance Record, Praised by PM

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan took to Twitter on Monday to share data of remittances Pakistanis working outside their country sent back home in March 2021.

Prime Minister Imran Khan stated on Monday that abroad Pakistanis’ affection and dedication to Pakistan are “unparalleled” and commended them for their record-breaking remittances.

“Overseas Pakistanis’ devotion to and love for Pakistan is unmatched. In spite of Covid, you sent over $2 billion for ten consecutive months, shattering all previous records, the prime minister wrote on Twitter on Monday.

“Your remittances increased 43% from the previous year to $2.7 billion in March. This fiscal year, remittances have increased by 26% thus far. Thank you, Premier continued.

There is no affection or dedication like that of Overseas Pakistanis to Pakistan. You broke all records by sending over $2 billion for ten consecutive months in spite of Covid. Remittances increased 43% from the previous year to $2.7 billion in March. This fiscal year, remittances have increased thus far.

Remittances from Pakistanis living abroad totaled $2.27 billion in January, up 19% over the same month in 2020—the eighth consecutive month of remittances exceeding $2 billion, according to the prime.

“To date in this fiscal year they are up 24% compared to last year; this is a record for our country and I thank our overseas Pakistanis,” the prime minister was reported as adding.

Remittances going home have reportedly been a major factor in the rupee’s strength during the pandemic’s toughest periods.

The rupee was also kept strong by increased inflows from Pakistani expats via the Roshan Digital Account (RDA) into a variety of assets, including stock markets, real estate, and saving certificates.
