Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday held a telephone conversation with the United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres and discussed recent developments in South Asia.
Pakistan Respond to Indian Misadventure Threat
PM Shehbaz told the UN Secretary General that Pakistan will respond to any Indian misadventure with full force. He emphasized Pakistan’s sacrifices in the global war on terror and condemned terrorism in all its forms.
India’s Allegations and the Kashmir Conflict
The prime minister rejected India’s accusations and called for a fair and impartial probe into the Pahalgam attack. He also voiced concern over India’s state-sponsored terrorism in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), where the freedom struggle is being suppressed under the label of terrorism.
India’s Water Aggression Sparks Tensions
Highlighting water as vital for 240 million people, PM Shehbaz condemned India’s weaponization of the Indus Basin waters. He urged the UN to advise India to act responsibly and avoid escalations. “Pakistan respond to Indian actions that threaten sovereignty with full force,” he reiterated.
Pakistan’s Diplomatic and Military Response
India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty and closed the Attari-Wagah border. It also reduced its diplomatic presence in Pakistan. In return, Pakistan shut down its airspace for Indian flights and convened a National Security Committee meeting chaired by PM Shehbaz.
National Security Committee’s Stance
The committee stressed that the Indus Waters Treaty is an internationally binding agreement with no room for unilateral suspension. It declared that any attempt to divert Pakistan’s water rights would be treated as an act of war and met with full-spectrum retaliation.
UN Secretary General’s Position
The UN chief praised Pakistan’s efforts for regional peace and said any escalation would be dangerous at this critical time. PM Shehbaz also urged the UN to work toward resolving the Kashmir issue in line with UN Security Council resolutions.
Commitment to Peace Amid Escalation
Despite rising tensions, PM Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to global peace and stability. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, Pakistan aims to uphold international norms and foster diplomacy.
