Nepra hits the crowds with a different electric rate pump

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved an increase of Rs0.48 per unit in the power tariff, reported TV channel on Monday.

The fuel adjustment for K-Electric customers has been approved by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) at a rate of Rs 1.71 per unit, which has heightened concerns over growing utility expenses. Customers in Karachi are being dealt yet another blow as rising electricity costs squeeze household budgets.

The residents are furious over the seemingly never-ending price hikes, particularly in light of the extra hike of Rs 4.45 per unit that was implemented in October and November of 2023.

Nepra approved the raise in response to the Federation’s application, noting changes for particular fiscal year 2023 quarters. The new tariffs will take effect on January 1st, 2023. Extra fees are planned for April, May, and June of that year, 2023, totaling 46 paise per unit from January to March.

Additionally, beginning on January 1, there will be an increase of Rs 1.24 per unit for power used in July, August, and September of 2023.

This price hike comes after a previous one in which K-Electric customers saw a rise of Rs 4.45 per unit during the first quarter of the previous fiscal year. In October and November of 2023, further fees were added, which had a big effect on customer costs. Furthermore, K-Electric’s industrial clients will be subject to an additional fee of Rs 3 per unit for a two-month period.

Customers in Karachi are faced with difficulties as a result of the continuous increase in electricity prices, which raises questions regarding the affordability of necessities, particularly for homes who are already struggling financially.
