Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) Chairman Fazlur Rehman on Sunday warned the establishment and the armed forces against blocking people’s way. Addressing an anti-government meeting of the PDM at Minar-e-Pakistan on Sunday, Fazl said the establishment should let people take over the parliament. He said it would be the people of Pakistan who would rule the country and decide its fate. He said the parliament belonged to people of Pakistan. He said that confrontation between institutions and theft of people’s mandate would take the country towards anarchy. He said that Pakistan would have to be saved from anarchy. He said that wounds of establishment’s role in political affairs of the country would deepen if the incumbent government of the PTI continues to work. He said that institutions had become weaker and the country was not being run properly. Spelling out objectives of the PDM, Fazl said it would keep Islamic, democratic and religious identity of the constitution intact. He said that parliament would be supreme and the role of the establishment and the intelligence agencies in the political matters of the country would have to be eliminated.
He said that reforms would be introduced to make the elections process free and fair. He said that basic rights of people, 18th Constitutional Amendment, freedom of the media and freedom of expression would be protected. He said that issues like inflation and unemployment would be addressed and local governments would be restored. Towards the end of his speech, Fazl said a news channel was saying the number of people attending the Lahore rally was just 3,000 to 4,000 people. He said it seemed this channel was serving someone’s interest and it should be ashamed of its claim. He said that PDM allies and workers would march on Islamabad by the end of February or beginning of March and the lawmakers would throw their resignations on rulers’ faces. Fazl asked people to promise to free the country of the selected government and international pressure. He said there was a need to free the army and other institutions of the influence of the international establishment. He said there were two reasons India tightened its grip over occupied Kashmir last year: either the Imran Khan government made the country too weak to handle India or it sold Kashmir to India. Fazl said it was Imran Khan who was praying for Modi’s victory in the Indian general elections a few years ago and saying that Modi would resolve the Kashmir issue. PDM is an alliance of 11 opposition parties currently trying to topple the federal government led by Prime Minister Imran Khan of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
