On May 21, 2024, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif laid the foundation stone for the Nawaz Sharif IT City in Lahore. This initiative marks the beginning of a large-scale transformation. The IT City, covering 853 acres, is designed to become a hub of innovation, technology, and employment opportunities.
2. Economic and Technological Zone
The redevelopment plan includes several specialized zones. These comprise both commercial and residential areas, offering modern living spaces alongside business facilities. Moreover, it creates a dynamic environment for investment and growth.
3. Educational Valley (Knowledge City)
Another highlight is the Educational Valley, also known as Knowledge City. It aims to collaborate with international universities and introduce high-quality education programs. In addition, it will offer advanced skill development for youth.
1. Film City:
This zone will be equipped with cutting-edge technologies to boost the local film industry. It is expected to attract filmmakers and investors from across the region.
2. IT and Tech District:
This district will focus on technological innovation. It will support startups and provide facilities for IT companies, fostering a vibrant ecosystem for entrepreneurs.
3. Education and Jobs:
CM Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the importance of the IT City in youth empowerment. Not only will it offer vocational training, but it will also provide IT courses with international certifications. As a result, young people will be better prepared to compete globally.
Furthermore, the project is expected to create one million jobs. It also aims to attract foreign investment through a ten-year tax break. This will support growth in IT, education, and film sectors.
4. Future of 3G, 4G and Beyond
Maryam Nawaz Sharif acknowledged the previous efforts of the PML-N government under her father’s leadership in introducing 3G and 4G technologies. Building on this legacy, the IT City will offer advanced telecom infrastructure. Notably, it will host Pakistan’s first dedicated Data Center, providing secure storage solutions for both local and international businesses.
5. Empowering Local Entrepreneurs
The Punjab government is committed to providing land and infrastructure to support business operations in the IT City. This initiative encourages both local and international companies to invest in the region. In particular, the Film City zone can play a crucial role in modernizing Pakistan’s entertainment industry. At the same time, it helps diversify the economy.
