PARIS: Lionel Messi admitted winning the Copa America with Argentina might have been the determining factor in him claiming the men’s Ballon d’Or prize for the seventh time after a turbulent year, as Spain’s Alexia Putellas took the women’s award.
Lionel Messi won his eighth Ballon d’Or trophy on Monday, while Alexia Putellas won her first Ballon d’Or Féminin.
With this win, Messi broke the record and now has two more trophies than his bitter rival Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi had a major role in Argentina’s win in the Copa América earlier this year, despite having a relatively quiet year at the club level.
He also finished as the top scorer in the Spanish league and scored two goals to help Barca win the Copa del Rey.
Before he left for Paris Saint-Germain in the summer, Barcelona had lost in the opening round of the Champions League and finished third in La Liga.
Messi stated, “I’m really proud to win the France Football Ballon d’Or again.” “Winning it for the seventh time is amazing.” Without my family, friends, and all of the individuals that support and follow me, I could not have succeeded. Thank you to each and every one of them.
