Russia Offers to Mediate in Kashmir Conflict Between India and Pakistan
Russia offers to mediate in the long-running Kashmir conflict as tensions between India and Pakistan surge once again. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov made the offer during a call with Pakistani counterpart Ishaq Dar, following the recent deadly incident in the Pahalgam region on April 22. This diplomatic initiative aims to prevent further escalation and foster peaceful dialogue between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
“Particular attention was paid to the significant rise in tension between New Delhi and Islamabad,” stated the Russian Foreign Ministry. Lavrov emphasized Russia’s readiness to support a political solution—provided both India and Pakistan express mutual willingness.
Lavrov also spoke with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar two days earlier. In that call, he urged both sides to resolve their differences through diplomatic means and to avoid actions that might inflame the situation.
During his discussion with Lavrov, Ishaq Dar rejected India’s accusations and strongly criticized its inflammatory rhetoric. He specifically condemned India’s unilateral decision to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it a clear violation of international norms and bilateral commitments.
Dar proposed an impartial and transparent international investigation into the recent Pahalgam incident. He reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful resolution and regional stability.
Lavrov responded by expressing Russia’s deep concern over the current state of affairs. He underlined the importance of diplomatic engagement and mutual restraint to prevent the crisis from worsening.
Russia’s position is significant given its longstanding ties with both nations. While it remains India’s largest defense supplier and shares strategic cooperation with New Delhi, Moscow has also maintained strong bilateral relations with Islamabad in recent years.
The April 22 militant attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir’s Pahalgam area, which left at least 26 people dead, has added urgency to efforts aimed at de-escalation and conflict resolution.
International observers are closely watching the situation. Analysts say Russia’s willingness to mediate may open the door to a broader peace initiative, especially if supported by other regional powers and international institutions.
